...I think I figured it out, partly. When these people latched onto the idea that each of them was CHOSEN from the very earliest days, well before their birth, and that it didn;t matter if they did anything good during their lives or that anything bad they did would change their "chosen" status, what they were basically doing is declaring themselves outside the Law.

In those days it was the law of religion....when the Roman Empire collapsed there were no police or army any longer to enforce behavior....the highways became dangerous again, pirates roamed the seas, bandits robbed and killed merchants and stole caravans...lawlessness was everywhere...people huddled in towns afraid to venture out on roads....walls were built around cities which were also dangerous and lords built fortified castles and hired their own private armies..in all the chaos the church stepped up and tried to teach people that good deeds, decent behavior, would win a person eternal life...therefore it mattered very much if you obeyed the Law or not...and the only real Law left was ecclesiastical law...civil law had been overturned, the emperor fled Rome, the armies fell apart or became armed bandits.

Church teaching was that "good works" and "free will" could earn a person paradise...so there was an incentive to do and behave well....unfortunately the Pope abused this over time, selling indulgences and inventing ways in which to fleece people of their pennies...there was a reaction, basically a political rebellion dressed in a "re-born" Christianity...started by Martin Luther and soon growing to a thousand sects...all of them rejecting "good works" and free will in favor of predestination and the idea that a person could break God's Laws, as then taught by the Church...could do nothing "good" but whatever pelased him, knowing that God had already chosen the ones to be saved...and is it any wonder that no one thought HE was among the ones who would NOT be saved?

Each one convinced himself that he was among the chosen..and since he was, it didn;t matter whether he gave a blind man a penny or kicked him in the head...because good deeds no longer counted for anything. And they were JUST the kind who enjoyed kicking blind people in the head...ever wonder why all born-agains wind up sooner or later cursing and yelling that JESUS LOVES YOU YOU ASSHOLE!!! Or how mean they can be?

The people who believed this became self-rightrous, pious frauds who lorded it over the rest, who were clearly NOT chosen, especially if they believed the old beliefs, such as doing kindness and being gentle or humble...the born agains are filled with false pride, knowing that they are immune to the normal laws of society, at least of the religious society of their day...they could do as they pleased while believing they had carte blanche from the Lord...this became THEIR new truth.

This is one reason Minime has gone more apeshit than usual...because no one is interested in HIS idea of what truth is...but instead we're dealing in what Jesus said HIS truth is. Minime places HIS truth above the truth of Jesus...which is exactly what the earliest Protestants as well as all of them since then, have done...they placed THEIR new and "original" interpretation of what Jesus said over what he actually said, and what the Bible said AND what the popes said above what the church and Jesus had been saying until then.

Minime HAS to reject the simple truth in the words of Jesus...he HAS to place emphasis on HIS own truth...HIS opinion and interpretation...because he thinks we're ALL "just interpreting" the words of Jesus...when he sees the actual words of Jesus in St John he HAS to reject them...or re-interpret them...and he HAS to make HIS interpretation the "true" interpretation...he can't help himself...his entire system of beliefs is predicated on the notion that the Bible got it wrong where he WANTS it to be wrong...he and others like him did not WANT to obey laws...to do good....to live by the rules established by Jesus and the Church...instead he wanted to make his own beliefs supreme..place himself ABOVE the law of the Church...as they now want to place themselves above Civil Law.
