You should not think this is an Assyrian phenomenon. I have encountered many Kurds that are the same if not worse. They only live and breath to attack or sabotage those who are actually trying to do something positive. They have managed to drive away many good (wo)men who really want to improve the Kurdish life. I can introduce you to many well-intended Kurds who always promise to withdraw from the Kurdish cause because of the troubles that other Kurds put them through. But they all return after a while; they all realize that abandoning the nation to these crooks would not be right.
One thing that I have noticed is that majority of Western scholars and activists get involve in a cause because they believe in them without expecting something in return. This is not the case with people from the third World (or brought up in those cultures). The people from our area want name recognition and more, including financial gains, for every step that they take. Thatís why they cannot share the stage with anyone else. Try to do something and if it gets your name out in the public they go after you because you are stealing their thunder! I also have noticed that family/tribal ties are much stronger in countries with weak economies. You need the group to survive in places like that. This is not the case in the West. One of the tradeoffs in the post-industrial West is devolution of family. Economic empowerment results in break down of family/tribal ties (no more emotional political analysis) and a more logical approach to problems.
