When I was in "World Cultures" class we learned about the Arab/Israeli conflict.

The teacher went on about Hertzl, Zionism, etc.

I was utterly confounded when he explained that the British left and Israel was "declared".

I asked him: "How did the Zionists just declare that Israel exists in Palestine?"

His response was puzzling. So puzzling, in fact, that I don't remember what it was, AND ... I am still confused about that point.

Why did the UN make a partition plan that gave the Zionists 55% of Palestine and the indigenous people 45%, when the Zionists were in the minority?

I don't get it... still.
