I thought you were above conspiracy theory nonsense. Can a simpler, more naive reason be an explanation? ....that the US is a relatively open country, has people of every nationality, even ex-political prisoners, dissedents, wackos and freaks of every description. It amazes me that 'terrorism' by any one of these disgruntled idiots isn't more common-place in liberal Western countries. Despite Fred calling America an 'injection mould' rather than melting pot, I still think - especially after seeing the ME - that Western society is still the most open and best system for humanity.
"The government, any government, would like all of its citizens to identify themselves with the nation and the homeland. Nothing odd in that...look at how we're being forced to all be one kind of American right now in this country...the threat of external danger does that..." The Western model looks like the best to me so far: if you think the Americans are being forced to all be one kind of American then you ain't seen what it's like to live under Ba'atheys...or Kurds...or Persians... or any other ethnic in the East for that matter.
