In other words, I think that there were some assholes who really liked the idea that they were earthly manifestations of God too much... this idea was sort of enabling for the narcissistic power hungry... which is ultimately realized at the present as the head of a corporation. What a shock it was for the general population to find out that these people, too, were corrupt, just like the Church leaders of old... There's still a tendency to associate good morals & hard work w/ money - sort of a marriage between the Catholic tradition, the Protestant work ethic, & the Capitalist ideal.
