You know- every time I hear that title "Brokeback Mountain" I can't help but cringe a little. I'm sure it's a fine film, but it just seems to punctuate, for me at least, the absence of a queer and multicultural film movement here in the States.
Haven't I seen enough white heterosexual love films? Adventure films? Dramas? Etc?
Believe me, I'm open, and some day I'll probably even watch the movie, and maybe even love it. But today, right now, I'm not emotionally up for it.
However, if I may recommend a film that encompasses some of the issues and dramas of being queer and middle eastern, it would be "Lola and Billy the Kid". I first saw this film at the Castro theater in S.F. at the height of my own queer middle eastern experience. And fell in love with every character- no matter how ignoble they might be.
Imagine a Turkish film shot in the backdrop of a modern yet strangely unchanged Berlin- a city in the heart of Germany that has seen progress and chaos, communism, and industrial leadership. Blend into this vibe Turkish transexuals and music, dances, and dialogue, a few endearing German characters, suspense, friendship, the Turkish ghetto, family secrets, and an overall story that moves smoothly through the industrial parts of Berlin with great guts, characters, and dialogue.
While Jeff was recently telling me about his response to "Brokeback Mountain" I was again reminded of "Lola and Billy the Kid" and promptly oredered it online for a very affordable price. And I watched it again the other night. It's amazing how much we can forget about a story. It truly blew me away once more! And I fell in love with the characters all over again...
