Another thing that Hitchens seems to ignore or maybe is unaware of is the fact that the U.S helped create this "radical Islam" which it claims to be at war with. They did it before with communism and the war on drugs but for some reason some educated people still trust their government. Muslims had long been fighting extreme people and a perfect example is how the grant mufti if Dagestan was able to have the wahabbi extremists kicked out of his country. The Taliban only came to power with the help of the U.S and they were the same people who had previously been trained by them and funded against the Soviets. The Ottoman empire was an Islamic government yet it was not extreme at all. Whenever we hear of radicals and extremist, the U.S has its fingerprints all over it.

We have tens of thousands of troops in Afghanistan because of a few hundred or maybe a couple thousand Taliban fighters. There is no doubt that the U.S wants this war for other reasons just as it wants the war on Iraq. They don't want peace and stability in those lands or else there would be no reason to stay there. It amazes me that a person like Hitchens is not aware of that. I agree with him that the Abrahmic religions have been the biggest source of bigotry but what is his reason for being one? Has he never looked at when Spain was under Islam, the Ottoman empire or the Mughal dynasty in India? What evil did they do or where can he find anything in Islam similar to the history of Christendom? The two are similar religions and no doubt silly beliefs in gods, angels, heaven, hell, etc but do they have same records? If Muslims are so evil and their religion encourages bad things, why didn't they follow their religion correctly and why is that Christians did those things which Christianity supposedly does not allow?

There is a big confusion here where we dealing with two religion of which one is bad and violent yet the followers of the peaceful one have been most violent. Even this war in Iraq is fully supported by fundamental Christians support it financially.
