...I tyhink I mentioned this incident before...it was an eye-opener for me at the tender age of 18....along with another fellow we broke the Windows of a burning apartment and pulled an old man, who had passed out in his, chair from the fire at about the time the fire department finally showed up...I had several cuts to the bons on my elbows and I remember a photographer snapping a shot of a mecic washing out the wounds with a garden hose...by then over 300 people were crowding the sidewalks....what would ordinarily have been a good human-interest civic minded story turned up in the newspapers, and that´s the San Jose Mercury which has won several awards, the next day with a fucking interview with the fireman who explained how HE had walked in saved the man..no mention of the two citizens...I had a beard and this was in 1968...bearded people were America´s enemies then...so the story was sanitized.

The best part was my friend´s mother, whom we were visiting before he went to Vietnam...she, a rock-ribbed Republican who believed anything was really and truly shocked, because she had seen the whole thing...her face was something to behold....

The newapaper felt no qualms about lying, even with hundreds of witnesses who all KNEW the story was a lie....so much for a free press.
