: I don't want war. All those people who support a war in Iraq? They don't want war either.

xxx Oh, OK. That makes a lot of sense...

: But you know what the alternative to invading Iraq is? Exactly the same situation we are in now. Sanctions, bombings and oppression. You think this situation which we've been in for 10 years and counting with no end in sight is better than war?

xxx So, my argument is that the US gov't has it set up to where Iraqis have 2 horrible choices - war or slow death through sanctions. I argue that that should NOT be the case. This is the most inhumane way to treat another nation.

: What kind of sadist are you?

xxx Wanna find out? ;)

: Hell even if by some miracle the UN lifted the sanctions and the US stopped bombing the country, Saddam would still be sodomizing Iraq. Read my message again for a few examples.

xxx BUT, I don't know about that. Saddam did those things to supress revolts most likely backed by the CIA or other government agencies (BUT most likely the CIA), & Saddam was also backed by the US until the Gulf War - given weapons, etc. You know, the Kurds actually enjoy the most freedom in Iraq, even when the "No-fly zones" were not in place, compared to what they had to endure in Iran & Turkey.

: Then what? Iraqi people can't topple him, the Kurds and Shias tried and failed. And there's no way you'd support a war by the US, the only country who would be willing to topple him.

xxx This is where I'd ask you to find an Iraqi living in Iraq who would agree with you that the US can really "help" him/her.

: Bottom line: the US has installed a powerful dictator who cares only about himself and now that there's a chance they'll fix up their mistake. In 1991 they chose not to topple and we know what it led to. Now you want to make the same decision and pray that there'll be a different outcome? You're too naive and optimistic.

xxx I think it's naive & optimistic that the US will "make things better" by installing another puppet.
